Unexpected Treats featured regional review
Claude Moore Colonial Farm Part of George Washington Memorial Parkway McLean, Va.
Did we expect an pleasant day at an obscure northern Virginia historical site? Yes. Did we expect to be thoroughly transported back into 1771? Not at all. But that is what happened.
The Colonial Farm is completely isolated from the outside world. Thick trees capture exterior mechanical noises and block sight lines in all directions. The building reconstructions are impeccable and convincing. But here is the kicker: the costumed interpreters NEVER break character.
There is never any recognition that the year is 2006. Our 21st century clothes felt like an imposition. Our cameras now looked like improbable gadgets. Conversation with the interpreters was impossible. It was all more than a little disconcerting.
But we had a great time. The Farm is a gem that is bound to be loved and appreciated by northern Virginia residents and the most ardent of Colonial-era historians.
